Hillsborough Attendances

 Here are some key attendance facts about Hillsborough Stadium (home of Sheffield Wednesday):

Record Attendance:

72,841Sheffield Wednesday vs. Wolverhampton Wanderers, FA Cup Fifth Round, 17 February 1934.

(This is still the highest attendance ever recorded at Hillsborough.)

Modern Capacity:

Today, Hillsborough’s capacity is about 39,732 (after being an all-seater stadium post-1990s safety reforms).

Hillsborough Disaster:

On 15 April 1989, during an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, a tragic crush in the Leppings Lane end resulted in the deaths of 97 Liverpool fans.

This led to major changes in stadium design across England, especially the move toward all-seater stadiums following the Taylor Report.

First Match:

Hillsborough (then called Owlerton Stadium) opened in 1899. The first game played there was a friendly between Wednesday and Chesterfield.
